Abstract
The quest for sustainable practices in the oil and gas industry has led to significant advancements in drilling technologies, focusing on green drilling operations, particularly in developing environmentally friendly drilling fluids. This study explores the innovative use of pectin biopolymer as an eco-friendly additive or viscosity builder for fluid loss control in water-based drilling mud. The work proceeds with the pectin extraction from dried lemon peels, pectin modification, drilling mud formulation and experiments to characterize the mud density, specific gravity, plastic viscosity, pH value, and Filtration Properties using filter loss method at temperatures of 25℃ and 250℃, and compared to a standard mud prepared with Carboxymethyl Starch (CMS). From the results, Pectin Mud (PEM) provides superior performance over CMS.
